QOTW: Repetition

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.”

-Aristotle

This whole week I’m focusing on training, so I found this quote to be particularly appropriate since repetition and habit formation is at the heart of any type of training. Training seeks to answer questions such as what needs done? How does it get done? What skills do we need to accomplish our goals? And how do we create systems or processes that will reinforce those skills so as to make them almost second nature?

For pilot training, we use disciplined practice to focus on the areas my company’s data analysis identify as improvable. We also focus on those tasks we need to do well but are rarely called upon to actually do day-to-day. We constantly strive for excellence, and we seem to clearly understand and live out exactly what Aristotle says in this case.

How about you? Are you using repetition in your life to achieve excellence? Are you building the habit patterns that lead to success?
